As the summer season hits its peak, Nuremberg’s Albrecht Dürer Airport is experiencing a surge in travel activity. Anticipating over 710,000 passengers from both the Nuremberg metropolitan area and beyond during the Bavarian summer holidays, the airport is on track to exceed last year’s numbers. In 2022, a total of 706,000 passengers took to the skies during the summer season.
The airport’s comprehensive summer flight schedule, offering 62 non-stop destinations operated by 28 different airlines, is largely responsible for this notable increase in passenger traffic. Dr. Michael Hupe, the airport’s CEO, expressed satisfaction with the strong demand, stating, “The overwhelming response underscores our commitment to providing a diverse and extensive range of travel options.” Dr. Hupe also hinted at an upcoming winter flight plan, promising a similarly diverse array of choices.
During the first three weeks of the summer vacation period, the airport facilitated the travel of 373,840 passengers, marking an increase of over 9,000 passengers compared to the same timeframe last year. Notably, August 15, 2023, recorded the highest passenger count for a single day this summer, with 17,626 travellers passing through the airport.
Aircraft utilisation rates have been commendably high, with an average occupancy of around 90%, a significant improvement from the previous year. Among the popular destinations, Antalya in Turkey continues to be a favoured hotspot, served by seven airlines and catering to approximately 130,000 passengers. Mallorca follows closely behind with nearly 85,000 passengers. Other notable destinations include Istanbul and Frankfurt, acting as vital international hubs, and Heraklion in Crete.
This season, Nuremberg Airport has further enhanced its service quality by introducing 125 new staff members, primarily in operational roles such as check-in, baggage handling, and cabin cleaning. With the addition of these new team members, the airport’s workforce now totals 1,077 individuals.
While summer is still in full swing, the airport is gearing up for the winter season. The winter flight plan highlights sought-after destinations such as Egypt, the Canary Islands, and Turkey. A noteworthy addition to the plan is Abu Dhabi, with non-stop flights departing three times a week from Nuremberg. This new offering provides travellers with even more choices, as airlines like Condor and Eurowings expand their services.
